Everything you need to know about The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus
Jun 16, 2025

With modern infrastructure and cutting-edge technology supporting staff, physicians and researchers, The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will further strengthen the high standard of care across our region and enhance experiences for patients and visitors.
If you’re curious about what will make the new campus stand out or wondering how you’ll get there, we’ve pulled together some must-know details in one convenient place.
Location, location, location
The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus is centrally located near Dow’s Lake – just one kilometre east of TOH’s Civic campus and about one kilometre south of Highway 417 (the Queensway), Ottawa’s primary east-west transportation corridor.
You can get to the new campus by public transit, car or bike. Multiple city bus stops surround the perimeter of the site, and the current Dow’s Lake light rail transit (LRT) station is conveniently located at Carling Avenue across the street. The new campus will be integrated into the bike and pedestrian pathways in the area and the parking garage will have secure bicycle spaces, and parking for visitors or patients with limited mobility and spaces equipped for electric vehicle charging.
When will the new hospital open?
The Ottawa Hospital is working with partners right now to finalize the hospital’s design, cost and construction schedule. We expect to continue this phase of planning and development throughout 2025, after which we’ll be able to identify a clearer timeline for opening.
Single patient rooms
Every patient admitted to the new campus will have their own room.
Each of the 641 inpatient rooms will have large windows with natural light and views of the outdoors. There will be a fully accessible washroom and space for loved ones to stay overnight. Patients will be able to access their health information, manage appointments, enjoy entertainment and stay connected with loved ones through bedside technology.

Care spaces
The trauma centre for Eastern Ontario will be at the new campus and will include a rooftop heliport for more seamless access.
The new emergency department will have more beds and exam rooms than currently available at existing TOH campuses.
There will be more (and bigger) operating rooms and the mental health unit will have almost double the number of beds currently available.
Plans for an expanded nephrology program at the new campus include a new acute dialysis unit as well as a home dialysis unit that will increase access to dialysis in our community.
The Ottawa Hospital is aiming to integrate research spaces into clinical areas wherever possible at the new campus. Plans are currently underway for a new ambulatory care and research building, and the new campus will also be home to one of the most innovative neuroscience research programs in the world.
Public spaces
We want to create spaces that are inclusive, welcoming and functional for everyone. We are working with patients, staff, community members, and Indigenous partners to create spaces that will bring a sense of home to the facility, reduce stress and promote healing.
There will be spaces for spiritual reflection for all cultures as well as spaces for ceremony and healing for First Nation, Inuit and Metis patients and visitors. Public washrooms will be all access and we’re aiming for universal accessibility throughout the facility.
Digital innovation
As one of the most modern, technologically advanced health-care facilities in Canada, the new campus is being planned and designed with digital innovation at its core. Leveraging advancements in technology will support a more proactive approach to patient care and create a more connected experience between the community and the hospital. TOH is currently exploring digital technology to amplify our ability to monitor patients from afar – such as critical care patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) – which will help staff anticipate and address care needs sooner.
As the new campus is still in the planning and development phase, additional enhancements to patient care or facilities will be shared once details are made available.
